As a compact crossover SUV, 2019 Kia Sportage stands out among many of its rivals. Apart from its appealing prices, unrivaled 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty and a long list of standard and optional equipment, the Sportage offers one of the more powerful turbocharged engines in this class. With Subaru dropping its turbocharged Forester XT and Toyota relying on RAV4 hybrid, the Sportage now only has to chase the Jeep Cherokee and Ford Escape in the horsepower war. Yes, the Sportage also comes with a less powerful but more fuel-efficient 4-cylinder engine, all-wheel drive option and a number of optional driver aids, which many of them are standard on its rivals.
The 2019 Kia Sportage is a five-seat compact crossover SUV sold in LX, EX and SX Turbo trim levels. The base LX model has automatic headlights, a drive-mode selector (Sport, Normal, Eco), stain-resistant YES Essentials upholstery as standard equipment along with a rearview camera, a 5-inch touch-screen display, Bluetooth wireless connectivity, and 6-speaker AM/FM/CD player with USB input.
The EX is even better since cross-traffic alert, blind-spot detection, power-folding outside mirrors with turn signals, dual-zone climate control, power driver’s seat, glossy interior trim, leather upholstery, a 7-inch touch-screen infotainment system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Under the hood, the 2019 Kia Sportage come standard with a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine good for 181 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque. Fuel economy is far from impressive, especially the city numbers. The optional turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine is impressive, with 240 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque on tap and only a slight reduction in fuel economy. A 6-speed automatic is the only transmission offered. Front-wheel drive is standard, while all-wheel drive is an option on all versions. In track testing, the 2019 Kia Sportage EX AWD went to 60 mph from zero in 8.6 seconds. The Sportage can tow up to 2,000 pounds.
