2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Review, Specs, Prices

Chevrolet introduced the next-generation Silverado today, exactly 100 years after the brand delivered its first trucks to customers in January 1918. The all-new 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 sets the course for the next century of Chevy Trucks with the most functional bed of any full-size truck, weighs up to 450 pounds less for increased performance and offers a broad range of trims and engine or transmission combinations to help each customer find their ideal truck.

The weight savings comes from extensive use of mixed materials and advanced manufacturing processes throughout the next-gen truck. This allowed 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 to use the right material for the application and optimize every component for mass, durability, safety and functionality to meet our customers’ needs. For example, the body is 88 pounds (40 kg) lighter than before due to mixed materials use. All exterior swing panels (doors, hood and tailgate) are made of aluminum while fixed panels (fenders, roof and bed) are made of steel. The underlying safety cage uses seven different grades of steel, each tailored for the specific application.

The new 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is also larger than the outgoing model in virtually every dimension. For example, the Silverado crew cab, short box has 1.2 inches more total width, 1.5 inches more total height, 1.7 inches more total length and 3.9 inches more wheelbase. As a result, the Silverado offers an additional 3 inches of cab length for all configurations, and up to 4 cubic feet more interior volume. It also offers the largest cargo volume of any full-size truck in short-bed, standard-bed and long-bed models. In fact, at 62.9 cubic feet, the Silverado short bed offers more cargo volume than the standard bed of the Ford F-150.

Despite the larger footprint, the Silverado is up to 450 pounds lighter than the outgoing truck (crew cab, short-bed models with the 5.3L V-8 and Max Towing Package), due to advanced manufacturing and the use of mixed materials.

INTERIOR

The 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 interior design was also strongly influenced by customer feedback. Because truck owners use their vehicles for both hauling cargo and transporting people, customers’ top priorities were more comfortable seating, more interior cargo storage and more functional, easy-to-use controls. Accordingly, the cab has been stretched, with crew-cab models now offering 3 inches of additional rear-seat legroom for an impressive 44.5 inches of front legroom and 43.8 inches of rear legroom.

New available storage options include two 10-liter bins integrated in the second-row seatbacks for holding small items like gloves or tie-down straps, as well as a large 24-liter storage tray under the second-row seat that can secure everything from gallons of milk to fishing rods and tackle boxes.

Every surface has been designed for function and ergonomics, from the rotary knob textures to the infotainment screen angle. Even the luxurious High Country is subjected to stringent durability tests, including 100,000 seat-slide tests to make sure the supple seats meet the expectations of our toughest owners. The Silverado was already the first pickup to offer 4G LTE Wi-Fi connectivity, Apple Car Play, Android Auto, wireless phone charging and OnStar safety and security features.

TRIM LEVEL

The 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is a full-size pickup available in eight trim levels: Work Truck (WT), Custom, Custom Trail Boss, LT, RST, LT Trail Boss, LTZ and High Country. The Silverado 1500 is available in three cab styles: the two-door regular cab (WT only), the four-door extended (Double) cab and the crew cab. The regular cab seats three and can be had with either a 6.5-foot-long standard bed or an 8-foot-long bed. The extended cab can seat up to six and comes only with the standard bed. The crew cab adds full-size rear doors and increased rear legroom, and it’s available with the standard bed or a shorter 5-foot-8-inch bed.

The base WT is pretty bare-bones. It come standard with 17-inch steel wheels, air conditioning, a tilt-only steering column, a 7-inch touchscreen interface, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a six-speaker audio system with a USB port. The Silverado Custom trim adds 20-inch wheels, front tow hooks, power and heated mirrors, deep-tinted glass, cruise control and remote entry. The Custom Trail Boss trim level is four-wheel-drive only, and has 18-inch black wheels, trailering package and the Z71 off-road suspension package.

Building on the Custom trim level, the Silverado LT gets a 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, LED headlights, a tailgate damper, alloy wheels, a steering wheel with audio controls, an upgraded driver information display, OnStar with 4G LTE and Wi-Fi, and an 8-inch touchscreen. The RST get a power-locking and power-release tailgate, in-bed lighting, remote start, rear window defrost and dual second-row USB ports.

The LT Trail Boss is pretty much like the Custom Trail Boss, with a few exceptions. The LT Trail Boss comes standard with a 5.3-liter V8 engine. The LT Trail Boss adds some special exterior trim, dual exhaust, trailering package, and the contents of trailering and Z71 suspension packages.

The Silverado LTZ also gets the 5.3-liter V8 along with most of the RST standard equipment. It also adds a higher-definition rearview camera, power-folding and auto-dimming mirrors, heated tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, trailer brake controller, two 120-volt power outlets, dual-zone automatic climate control, a navigation system, leather upholstery, heated and power-adjustable front seats, driver-seat memory settings, and HD radio.

At the top, the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country get the LTZ equipment plus 20-inch chrome wheels, front and rear parking sensors, a power-up-and-down tailgate, chrome side step rails, a spray-on bedliner, a seven-speaker Bose audio system, ventilated front seats, heated second-row seats, a power-sliding rear window, wireless phone charging and lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.

Most features on the upper trim levels are offered on the lower ones as packages or stand-alone options. Other optional features include various axle ratios, off-road-oriented tires, larger wheels, tow mirrors, power-retractable side step rails, and a sunroof. The Max Trailering package features an integrated heavier-duty suspension calibration and a higher-capacity radiator. Also available are trailer monitoring systems that allow for trailer tire-pressure sensors or trailer rearview-camera connections.

The Safety package is available on LT, RST, LT Trail Boss and LTZ models, and it adds lane departure warning, front and rear parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. The Safety package II is available only on the LTZ and the High Country. It adds everything in the standard Safety package equipment plus forward collision warning with low-speed emergency braking, lane keeping assist, forward pedestrian detection with braking, automatic high beams, and a safety alert seat. The Technology package also for the LTZ and the High Country adds an in-mirror rearview camera display, a driver head-up display and a 360-degree parking camera.

POWERTRAINS

The 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 lineup also offers more choices than ever, including six engine/transmission combinations that give customers different combinations of performance, efficiency and value, as well as increased towing and payload capabilities:

  • Crew cab Silverado models increase in payload up to 14 percent, or 340 pounds.
  • The 4.3L V-6 now offer a maximum of 8,000 pounds towing, up 400 pounds (regular cab, rear-wheel-drive models).
  • The 5.3L V-8 with Max Towing Package now offers a maximum of 11,600 pounds towing, up 400 pounds (double-cab, rear-wheel-drive models).
  • For 2019, the 6.2L V-8 is now exclusively offered with four-wheel drive. Equipped with the Max Towing Package, it now delivers a maximum of 12,200 pounds towing, up 500 pounds from a similarly equipped 2018 model (double-cab, four-wheel-drive models).
  • The first engines to be produced will be the 5.3L V-8 equipped with an eight-speed automatic, and the 6.2L V-8 equipped with a 10-speed automatic. Both offer more than 5 percent improvement in city fuel economy, for an improvement of 1 mile per gallon based on EPA estimates.
