Ford’s awesome off-roader gains two real doors, drops its base engine, and picks up a few new toys.

We’ve been enamored with the F-150 SVT Raptor ever since Ford unveiled the truck almost two years ago. The off-road capability, toughness, and all-round bad-ass-ness quickly made the Raptor a C/D favorite. It’s clear we weren’t the only ones, as Ford claims that Raptors stay on dealer forecourts for a quarter of the time standard F-150s linger—just 11 days, compared to more than a month for Ford’s lesser trucks. For 2011, Ford is expanding the Raptor’s appeal by adding a four-door SuperCrew model to the mix.

Chevrolet has announced that Detroit-area-native Tim Allen will be the voice of the brand’s TV commercials. His voice will narrate ads for the Chevrolet Cruze, which will first air Tuesday, September 7.

Allen is known for his roles on the TV show Home Improvement as well as feature films like Toy Story and The Santa Clause. According to GM, his automobile collection includes a 1996 Chevrolet Impala SS and a 2000 Cadillac DeVille (ooo!).

This is far from the first time that automobile commercials have been accompanied by celebrity voices. Stars like Kevin Spacey and Jeff Bridges have narrated spots for Honda and Hyundai, respectively, to name but two. And Allen will replace athlete/actor/sportscaster Howie Long in Chevy’s ads.

Since the release of the original GT coupe in 2003, Bentley has sold more than 22,000 examples of the 6.0-litre, 552bhp W12 super-coupe. What’s more, the Crewe-based firm is confident that the revised model will be as instantly recognisable as its predecessor.

Initial impressions from the video show new wheels, a re-styled interior and a sleek twin headlamp design highly reminiscent of the new Mulsanne.

Called the Raptor, the 6.2-litre V8-powered beast is based on Ford’s popular F-150 truck. As well as providing plenty of power to all four wheels, the Raptor features custom-developed Fox Racing dampers which can cope with high-speed off-road driving, including landings from sizeable jumps!

For the 2011 model year, the firm has added a Double Cab SuperCrew model to the line-up, which adds a second row of seats and 300mm to the wheelbase, and joins the already-launched standard cab version.

The Raptor was originally launched with ‘just’ a 5.4-litre V8. But that has now been ditched, with all vehicles coming with the firm’s 6.2-litre V8, which generates 405bhp and 588Nm – 100bhp and 94Nm more than the smaller unit.

As well as offering buyers the choice of two bodystyles, Ford has created a new colour, called Ingot Silver metallic which can be personalised with additional, contrasting matt black decals. On the inside, Ford now includes a 4.2-inch LCD display called the ‘Productivity Screen,’ which shows data on off-road and towing performance.

Sadly, the super-sized Raptor is only available in the US, where both of the 2011 model year vehicles are now ready for order at dealerships.

Only 100 examples of the S60 T6 Design will be produced, all completed in menacing Black Sapphire metallic paint, and all lefthand drive. Under the bonnet, a remapped engine management system means that the V6 turbo’s power has been upped to 328bhp – a 26bhp increase – while torque has also been lifted, now a healthy 460Nm.    

That translates to a 0-62mph sprint time of just 5.8 seconds, charging on to an electronically limited top speed of 155mph. However despite the impressive stats the T6 will still manage 27.4mpg.

The suspension has been upgraded to cope, with tougher new springs lowering the whole automobile by 30mm, and the T6 comes with permanent four-wheel drive. To add some visual aggression, a new front spoiler and rear diffuser combo made from a mixture of superlight plastic and carbon fibre have been added. A set of quad-exhausts have sprouted from the rear, and the specially designed set of 19-inch diamond-cut black alloys are wrapped in Pirelli PZERO tyres.  

Unfortunately this hardcore edition of the T6 won’t be available in the UK, but interested buyers will have to pay the equivalent of £53,000 (€63,968) for the privilege of owning one of the hottest Volvos in years.  

Chevy’s middleweight Corvette makes for a hugely capable convertible.

Currently in its sixth generation as America’s sports car, the Chevrolet Corvette bristles with track-bred performance, unmistakable design, and each day comforts. Although it hasn’t been entirely modernized—leaf springs, anyone?—General Motors has whittled away at the car’s rough edges for well over half a century, resulting in one of the ideal all-around performance vehicles for the money.

Each week, our German correspondent slices and dices the latest rumblings, news, and quick-hit driving impressions from the other side of the pond. His byline may state Jens Meiners, but we simply call him . . . the Continental.

Right now, travelling anywhere between Mercedes-Benz’s Stuttgart headquarters, the company’s Bremen factory, and its Papenburg test track, you are bound to run into camouflaged M-B prototypes. Just last week, I spotted the next-generation SL, the SLK, and the new B-class. All of them appear to continue in the spirit of the current models. The B-class is once again a compact van with a short hood and high seating position. The SL and SLK keep the current models’ proportions, even though the SLK in particular will be a more muscular car. The dashboards will look more angular in the future. All of them will come with LED daytime running lights; the SLK gets horizontal front turn signals, similar to those on the current S-class. And while Mercedes toyed with the idea of switching back to a fabric roof for the SL, the company decided to stick with the folding hardtop, despite its packaging disadvantages.

Mercedes-Benz Viano

Here are two Mercedes models that definitely won’t make it to the U.S.: the just-face-lifted commercial vans Vito and Viano, tiny brothers of the Sprinter. While the Vito is unabashedly marketed to plumbers and craftsmen, the dressed-up Viano harbors upscale pretenses. This five-year-old van, just like the similarly sized Volkswagen T5, actually tries to compete with car-based minivans such as the Chrysler Town and Country in Europe. But the seating position and the steering-wheel placement betray their true nature. The T5, of course, is actually really nice, with the perfect execution I’ve come to anticipate from any recent VW. The Vito and Viano, on the other hand, are a far cry from any modern Mercedes car—and the face lift, which brings them visually closer to the R-class, changes tiny of that. Mercedes transporters were always engineered to different aesthetic and ride standards than the brand’s cars, but they are spacious and durable. If you can afford the gas bill, the top-of-the-line, 254-hp, 3.5-liter V-6 (which drives the rear wheels) is actually fun.

New Ford Ranger and a Small Toyota

Current Thai-built Ford Ranger

The U.S.-market Ford Ranger and the Ranger sold in Europe, Asia, and elsewhere are entirely different trucks. Built in Rayong, Thailand, the rest-of-the-world Ranger is a easy and cheaply built truck; now a replacement is around the corner. Badged as the Ford Ranger and the Mazda BT, the new model will be built from mid-2011 on. Will it come to the U.S when the current model is discontinued? Probably not; even the new, Thai-built model would be a major step down from previous U.S. Rangers.

At the Paris auto show in four weeks, Toyota will launch the Verso-S. One of the smallest microvans, it is powered by a 69-hp, 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine or a 1.3-liter, 97-hp four. It is tiny, but a clear departure from the organic style of the previous Yaris Verso, which was sold in Europe until 2005.

European Thoughts on Lincoln

Following the April 1998 launch of the Lincoln LS, Ford announced that its upscale brand would enter the European market for the 1999 calendar year. The official press picture of the LS (license plate: K-DM 3418) is a special gem of my collection, as Lincoln’s move into Europe subsequently turned out to be tiny more than the figment of a few executives’ of imaginations. In the following years, other brands in Jac Nasser’s orbit were always more important than Lincoln, and the money that the brand would have needed was channeled into Volvo, Jaguar, Land Rover, and Aston Martin—all of which are no longer part of Ford Motor Company.

To be sure, Ford tried to make Lincoln more “European.” These attempts included Richard Parry-Jones’s totally gratuitous technical redesign of the huge rear-drivers (Town Car, Grand Marquis, Crown Victoria) for the 2003 model year. The land yachts did become slightly more dynamic, even though the change wasn’t called for by the brand’s traditional customers, who—in the eternal words of then-Lincoln designer Gerry McGovern (who is now back at Land Rover)—”will all be dead soon anyway.” What’s more, chassis replacement parts which were typically stored by fleet customers became worthless overnight. To top things off, that new chassis ate up the money that was badly needed for a visual face lift of the Crown Victoria, which was previewed by the Police Interceptor concept at the 2003 New York auto show but never materialized in showrooms.

With the new focus on Lincoln and the fact that every other part of the “Premier Automotive Group” has been sold off or is in the process of being closed down, is there an excuse for Lincoln not to thrive? Expectations are high.

The new automobile is a joint project with Toyota and was previewed by the FT-86 concept automobile which debuted at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2009.

Both Toyota and Subaru branded models are expected to be launched late in 2011, but the front lights and bonnet-scoop on this mule signal it out as the latter.

Unlike the Toyota badged automobile – which will be rear-wheel drive only – the Subaru will come equipped with a four-wheel drive system that runs a rear-wheel drive bias.  Like the Impreza, the newcomer will be offered with a 2.0-litre flat-four cylinder boxer engine. That means power should stand at around 200bhp, allowing for a 0-62mph of just under seven seconds.

Engineers have worked hard to ensure the motor meets the latest emissions regulations, and even though it’s unlikely to be frugal – the Impreza’s boxer is infamously thirsty – the newcomer should return around 35mpg.

Yet while the Subaru Legacy donates its chassis, not much of the basic architecture will be retained in the new model. The springs, dampers, brakes and steering will all be uprated, to ensure the newest Subaru is every inch the rear-driven sports car. The production version is set to cost at least £22,000 when it arrives.

And while the Picanto is wearing a substantial disguise, the newcomer’s proportions are notably similar to the automobile it replaces. But the all-new car’s boxy shape has been given a serious injection of style by design boss Peter Schreyer and his team.

At the front, swept back headlights and the familiar tiger’s snout chrome grille are visible, while the current car’s kinked shoulderline is replaced with a steeply rising one, giving the Picanto a more sporty profile.

The automobile pictured here has five doors, and is likely to be offered in that bodystyle at launch, but Kia is currently evaluating whether to build an even cheaper three-door version.

Expect the Picanto to feature a similarly impressive interior, with a practical yet stylish design that echoes the recently-launched Sportage. And just like the SUV, which majors on value for money, the Picanto will be packed with kit like air conditioning, electric windows and an MP3-compatible stereo.  

Under the bonnet, the Kia will get the same all-new 1.0-litre petrol engine that emits 99g/km of carbon dioxide, which will debut at Paris in the 2011 model year Hyundai i10. The Picanto uses the same platform as its Hyundai sister car.

The new Picanto will make its global debut at the Geneva Motor Show next March. Prices are likely to remain highly competitive, with entry-level versions costing around £7,000 when it go on sale in the UK early next summer.

Our spies captured the first photos of the practical addition to the range hot weather testing in a very comprehensive disguise. However, anticipate the estate to feature the same handsome new look as the regular C4 hatchback from the bottom of the windscreen forwards.

From there back, the estate gains a gently curving roofline to give a more dynamic appearance, and a short rear overhang to reduce the car’s bulk. However, despite the design flair, boot space is expected to be around 500-litres, to compete against the 482-litres offered by the Ford Focus Estate, and 505-litres of the VW Golf Estate.

The engine range is carried over from the C4 range, including 1.6-litre petrol and diesel units, and a range-topping 2.0-litre diesel. The 1.6-litre diesel HDi unit will be offered with the firm’s new e-HDi stop begin system and regenerative alternator, which cuts carbon dioxide emissions to around 110g/km for the Estate.

Expect the latest addition to the C4 range to make its debut next year, most likely at the Geneva Motor Show in March, before going on sale in the summer.
