If you’re confused by this quagmire of news, it’s understandable. And you’re not alone. Saab is a relatively massive industrial firm, and it’s going through a sophisticated bankruptcy process in Sweden. State- and privately held Chinese manufacturers are in some cases declining to be forthcoming about their positions in negotiations—and in other cases are legally required to stay quiet. Even international news organizations with staff on the ground in Sweden and China are relying in part on second-hand information.

At 7.6 seconds, the 2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon is 3.9 seconds quicker to 60 mph than the SUV it replaces, thanks to its new 285-hp, 3.6-liter V-6 and five-speed automatic. To put that in perspective: You could run a BMW M3 sedan to 60 mph and then, very immediately  thereafter, run the new  ute to 60 mph in the same time it would take the old one, with its four-speed auto and 3.8-liter noisemaker, to huff  its way to that speed.

It’s simple to confuse weird with bad. The Mitsubishi i is weird. It looks like a computer mouse. It has windshield wipers that resemble Ultraman’s arms in attack mode. It is powered by a 66-hp electric motor mounted under the rear seats. It carries onboard the energy equivalent of less than half a gallon of gas. Its front tires look like compact spares. We could go on. But despite being weird, the i isn’t bad.

The automobile in these photos is more aggressive than we’ve seen before, with a lower front splitter and grille borrowed from the Concept A. That could be down to the fact this automobile is wearing an optional AMG styling package. 

Under the skin, the A-Class will feature an all-new front-wheel-drive platform with McPherson struts at the front and a multi-link rear axle, while power will come from the latest C-Class engines with a line-up of four-cylinder petrol and diesel units.

There will also be a new 2.0-litre turbocharged and direct-injection petrol engine, which the Concept A previewed in 204bhp hot hatch form, hooked up to a dual-clutch gearbox.

Expect to see the new Mercedes A-Class unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March, even though it’s likely to be five-door only. The sportier three-door model will follow later in the year.

The charge relates to claims Huhne lied to police about who was driving a speeding automobile in 2003. Ex-wife Vicky Pryce faces the same charges and both are due to appear in court on 16 February.

Huhne has stated he is innocent but announced he was resigning from his Cabinet position “to avoid distraction” while he fights the charges.

Director of Public Prosecutions Keir Starmer said: “The essence of the charges is that between March and May 2003, Mr Huhne, having allegedly committed a speeding offence, falsely informed the investigating authorities that Ms Pryce had been the driver of the automobile in question, and she falsely accepted that she was the driver.”

Huhne and Pryce face prison sentences of more than two years if convicted of perverting the course of justice.

The 2.0-litre TDIe unit is available in two power outputs, 134bhp and 161bhp. The former is only available for the Sportback and is capable of average fuel economy of 64.2mpg, emits 117g/km of CO2 and can reach 62mph in 9.5 seconds.

The more powerful engine manages 0-62mph in 8.7 seconds (8.4 seconds for the Coupe), and returns 62.8mpg and 118g/km of CO2 (64.2mpg and 115g/km respectively for the Coupe). Both options come mated to a six-speed manual gearbox.

The new engine is on sale now, starting from £27,320 for the Sportback and £28,775 for the Coupe with the 161bhp TDIe.

Audi has also introduced a new trim level, which is available now on all four-cylinder TDI models. 

SE Technik trim comes with DVD Navigation, iPod connection, parking sensors and cruise control on top of standard SE specification. It is available for a £1000 premium on the Sportback and £500 on the Coupe.
